(October 6, 2018) The GOP just confirmed it. Brett Kavanaugh is now Supreme Court Justice Kavanaugh. Despite lying under oath and despite sexual assault allegations that weren’t properly investigated. I’ve been disgusted before — in fact, I’m in a permanent state of disgust, and it gets to a point that it can’t get any more intense. Just like once the temperature outside hits 85 it doesn’t matter from then on up. It’s just too bloody hot to deal with.
So now it’s official — The GOP threw away the rule book and nothing means anything anymore.
When a president on Inauguration Day places his hand on Lincoln’s Bible and swears that they will uphold the Constitution of the United States, it no longer means shit.
Taking an oath to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, (and if you’re religious, so help you God) means nothing. Whether Brett Kavanaugh lied about assaulting Dr. Ford during the sexual assault hearing or not, we’ll never know for sure, but we do know for a fact that he lied about plenty of other things when he was under oath — during his previous confirmation hearings, during his Supreme Court confirmation hearing and during the hearing about the sexual assault allegations against him. He lied and lied and lied. But it doesn’t matter. Brett Kavanaugh went to Yale and he was captain of the football team, so he’s entitled to this job, no matter what. Telling the truth so help him God? Fuck that! And lying under oath being a criminal offense? Not when you’re rich and the darling of the far right wing of the Republican party.
An FBI investigation? An independent FBI investigation? Yeah, whatever.
And the separation of power between the three branches of government? Screw that!
An impartial, independent Supreme Court? Don’t make me laugh. Or rather, don’t make the UN laugh.
Those morals right-wing Christian Republicans go on about, you know, the ones they have that Democrats and atheists don’t have? No decent person would touch them with a ten-foot pole.
Straight-laced, oh-so-Christian, middle-aged Republican males who say they respect women? If they continue to support the likes of Mitch McConnell or any of the Republicans on the Judiciary committee, they’re lying. Everyone who still supports Trump after the way he mocked Dr. Ford’s testimony during the sexual assault hearing at that rally and says they respect women — they’re lying.
That includes Senator Jeff Flake. He was supposedly so brave to stand up and demand another FBI investigation into the sexual assault allegations! Completely meaningless grandstanding. The FBI didn’t look into any of the folks who claimed to have evidence corroborating Dr. Ford’s sexual assault accusations, so he could say that the report didn’t include any corroborating evidence of sexual assault, so he voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court. If he really meant it — if he really wanted to know more before he cast his vote, he wouldn’t have accepted this rag as a proper, independent FBI investigation report. He’s no less less sleazy than any of the others.
And Senator Susan Collins? She voted for Brett Kavanaugh because she promised Trump and Mitch McConnell beforehand that she would. It didn’t matter how Kavanaugh came across during the hearing. It didn’t matter which facts directly contradicted his statements under oath. Whether the FBI did a real investigation or this sham or handed in a filled-in Mad Libs booklet, it didn’t matter.
None of it matters. For the present GOP, the end justifies the means. An impartial Supreme Court, an independent judiciary, due process, democracy itself? If ignoring those keeps them in power, the Republicans will do so. Senator Flake won’t save you, Senator Collins won’t save you, the Constitution won’t save you. The GOP is the majority, so they can do what they want. And what they did was throw out the rule book. It’s gone. That’s how fascism begins. Vote them out in November.
